How to Calculate Revenue per Treatment Room

Reviewed by Chantel, COO ·

Short answer: Revenue per treatment room is the revenue a room generates divided by the hours it was available. To make it useful, also calculate contribution per available hour and utilization (booked hours ÷ available hours). These three numbers show which rooms are underused, which services suit each room, and where scheduling changes could add capacity without new space.

Key takeaways

  • Measure each room by available hours, booked hours, revenue and contribution.
  • Utilization = booked hours ÷ available hours.
  • Contribution per available hour is more useful than revenue alone.
  • Look at day-of-week patterns before moving services or staff.

Why measure revenue per treatment room?

Rooms are a fixed cost. When one room sits empty two afternoons a week, that capacity is paid for but unused. Measuring each room shows where the gaps are and whether they come from scheduling, provider availability or demand.

It also helps with decisions such as adding a device, opening longer hours or taking on another provider.

How do you calculate room productivity?

  • Available hours: hours the room could be booked
  • Booked hours: hours actually scheduled with treatments
  • Utilization: booked ÷ available
  • Revenue per available hour: room revenue ÷ available hours
  • Contribution per available hour: room contribution ÷ available hours

Record each room separately for the same period, ideally a full month.

How does the room productivity worksheet help?

The worksheet has a table to record each room, the formulas, a hypothetical example and guidance on interpreting results carefully, for instance when a low-utilization room is reserved for a specialized device.

Resource 008 is organized into these sections:

  • Record each room
  • Formulas
  • Hypothetical example
  • Interpret carefully

For the calculation, use tab “008 Room productivity” in the Aesthetic Intelligence Calculation Workbook. Blue cells are editable inputs.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good room utilization rate?

There is no universal benchmark. Compare your rooms against each other and against your own history, and leave realistic room for turnover and cleaning.

Should I include setup and cleaning time?

Count them as unavailable time or build them into each appointment's booked time, but be consistent across rooms.

Can this help decide whether to add a room?

Yes. If current rooms are consistently highly utilized at peak times and demand is unmet, adding capacity may be justified. Check with Resource 040 first.
